– The outstanding Italian soprano returns to Valencia to embody Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux, closing the Tudor trilogy by Donizetti that she has headlined in three consecutive seasons.
After starring in Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto returns in June to the Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia to conclude the Tudor Trilogy by Gaetano Donizetti with Roberto Devereux, a project she has been unfolding over three consecutive seasons. “Donizetti, fascinated by English history, composed three operas, the last of which has Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen (Elisabetta), as its absolute protagonist, although the opera is titled Roberto Devereux,” states the singer.
Eleonora Buratto meets again with the Spanish public after achieving a new triumph in her artistic career with her benchmark interpretation of the protagonist of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival and at the Berlin Philharmonie. In Valencia, she will revive a very different heroine to close the Donizettian cycle, confessing she feels “moved,” she assures, with the conclusion of this project; “I have had the honor of debuting all three operas at Les Arts and I am grateful for this opportunity which, over these years, has allowed me to approach three extremely interesting characters from both a dramaturgical and vocal point of view, following with them the creative evolution of the composer; an idea that in Devereux materializes with a sober orchestral writing and in the tragic and psychologically multifaceted figure of Elisabetta. I hope to give this great Donizetti character the fury of offended royalty, but also more feminine feelings like the jealousy that clouds her mind and tears her heart apart, resolved in a vocal line of great virtuosity. A tragic force that makes the fascinating character by Donizetti and his librettist, Salvatore Cammarano, a tormented, contradictory woman, powerful in the eyes of society and fragile in the depths of her heart.”
As in the two previous installments of the Trilogy programmed at Les Arts, the production of the electrifying concluding title bears the signature of Jetske Mijnssen for the stage direction, while maestro Francesco Lanzillotta will conduct the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana.
The performances will be on June 4, 7, 11, 14, and 18, in which Eleonora Buratto will share the stage, as in the previous productions of the Trilogy, with Silvia Tro Santafé (Sara) and Ismael Jordi (Roberto Devereux), alongside Lodovico Filippo Ravizza (Lord Duke of Nottingham), Filipp Modestov (Lord Guglielmo Cecil) or Irakli Pkhaladze (Sir Gualtiero Raleigh), among others.
For the remainder of the season, Eleonora Buratto has Leonora in Il Trovatore for her return to the Royal Ballet and Opera in London (July), Tosca at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago (August), and Verdi’s Requiem at the Gstaad Festival Tent.
