-Later the Spanish singer will make a debut performance of the Alexander Nevsky cantata

March 2019

The Madrid-born mezzo-soprano will return to the Barcelona opera house, Gran Teatre del Liceu, to take the role of La Cieca in Ponchielli´s opera La Gioconda.  At the Liceu María José Montiel will be performing in the same Pier Luigi Pizzi production that premiered at the Opéra National in Paris, in which she also participated.  “I have marvellous memories of that debut. The great maestro Daniel Oren was conducting. It was unforgettable and we received great public and critical acclaim,” Montiel explains in a break from rehearsals of La Gioconda at the Liceu. “I sing the role of La Cieca, La Gioconda’s mother. It is a role which, in spite of not being very large, is very important because the beautiful melodies she sings accompany the heroine to the end of the opera. I love it that I am returning to this character which I am so fond of at the Liceu, where I sang in the famous Calixto Bieito production of Carmen” receiving the Campoamor Opera Prize for best singer of the season for her performance.

Later, Montiel will add the Alexander Nevsky cantata, Sergei Prokofiev´s Op. 78 to her repertoire, and her debut with the piece will take place at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid within the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir season, conducted by Antonio Méndez (concerts on the 31st May and the 1st June).
