-The Armenian-French mezzo will take the lead role in L’italiana in Algeri
After performing the title role of Carmen in Paris, Palermo, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Zurich, the role of Olga in Evgeni Onegin in Toronto and singing La donna del lago in Marseilles, the Armenian-French mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan will make her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in December as Isabella, the lively leading lady in the first cast of Rossini´s L’italiana in Algeri, a role which she performed for the first time in Paris in 2014 and will now be singing again in Barcelona.
The young singer, whose repertoire includes baroque, bel-canto, Verdi, French and 20th century operas, sang in Spain for the first time in Valencia at the Palau de Les Arts in 2015 in Norma and Nabucco to enormous critical acclaim. She returned in 2016 to sing Dalila (Samson et Dalila, Saint-Saëns). “Making my debut in the Barcelona Liceu is like a dream come true, as this is one of the most important opera houses in the world” the mezzo explains, “and even more so as I will be singing in a Rossini opera. I know that there is a great tradition for bel-canto at the Liceu, a style which I love and which suits my voice very well. I have sung in two of Rossini´s great serious operas, such as Semiramide (in Moscow, -alongside Alberto Zedda-, Montpellier and Marseilles) and La donna del Lago (in the Pesaro Rossini Festival and now in Marseilles), as well as Stabat Mater. Now I will once again be performing in one of his famous comic operas.”
Varduhi Abrahamyan will appear at the Liceu on the 13th, 15th, 18th, 21st and 23rd December in a Vittorio Borrelli production conducted by the foremost Italian specialist in the genre, Riccardo Frizza.
Upcoming engagements in Abrahamyan´s diary include Carmen at the Oviedo Opera, her first Princess Eboli in Don Carlo in Las Palmas Grand Canary, the role of Siébel in Gounod´s Faust at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London and her long-awaited return to the Paris Opéra National as Preziosilla in La forza del destino. She has performed in Carmen, Evgeni Onegin, Falstaff, Un ballo in maschera, the world premiere of the opera Anna Akhmatova, Píkovaya dama, L’incoronazione di Poppea and Giulio Cesare at the Paris Opéra National in the past.
